Wiliot: battery-free sensing at item level

Wiliot is one of the two systems CleverTag supplies. This page explains, in plain language, what Wiliot is, how it works and where it typically fits. CleverTag is an official Wiliot dealer in the Benelux.

What is Wiliot?

Wiliot makes stamp-sized sensors, the IoT Pixels, that power themselves from the radio waves around them. You stick one on a product, box, pallet or reusable crate, and it continuously sends data over standard Bluetooth. No battery, no charging, no manual scanning. This is often called Ambient IoT: sensing that rides on the energy and networks that are already there.

How is it different from a barcode or RFID?

A barcode or RFID label usually needs an active scan at a fixed point. The IoT Pixels transmit on their own and continuously, as long as they are within range of a gateway. That often gives a more granular and up-to-date picture, without anyone having to scan. Which approach fits depends on your process; we compare them further in the knowledge base on IoT tracking.

What can Wiliot measure?

Exactly what you can measure and how accurately depends on the environment and the setup. We are happy to look at that with you.

Do I need expensive equipment?

Usually not right away. The Pixels are read by ordinary Bluetooth bridges and gateways rather than special, costly readers, and the data comes together in the Wiliot Cloud. A small, well-scoped pilot is often a sensible first step to see whether it fits. More on this in the knowledge base.

Where is it used?

In practice you see Wiliot in retail and supply chain, in the cold chain and food safety, and for tracking reusable assets such as crates and pallets. Whether a use case fits depends on your goal and situation.

And the building side?

If you want to make your buildings and installations visible rather than individual products, look at IAconnects, the second system CleverTag supplies. Both are usable on their own and, when you want to bring the data together, can be connected via APIs.

Frequently asked questions

What is Wiliot?

Ambient IoT with battery-free IoT Pixels: small sensors that power themselves and send location, temperature and humidity over standard Bluetooth. CleverTag is an official dealer in the Benelux.

Do I need special readers?

Usually not: the Pixels work with ordinary Bluetooth bridges and gateways rather than costly readers. What you need depends on the environment.

What can Wiliot measure?

Presence and rough location, plus temperature and humidity. That often makes it suitable for the cold chain. The exact possibilities differ per use case.
